  • He served as the editor-in-chief of The New York Times from May 2014 to June 2022.[4] Between 2011 and 2014 Baquet was managing editor under the previous executive editor Jill Abramson.[5] He is the first Black person to have been executive editor.[1]

    A native of New Orleans, Baquet began his career in journalism there in the 1970s before moving to the Chicago Tribune in the 1980s.

    He joined The New York Times metro desk in 1990 and in 1995 became that paper's national editor,[6] after having served as deputy metro editor. In 2000, he left to become managing editor, and later executive editor of the Los Angeles Times.
